Early evolutionists, such as Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather) believed that existing species transformed into other species in a certain way. Etienne Geoffroy St.Hilaire was Lamarck's embryologist student who coined the term “transmutation” to describe this theory. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, attacked the idea of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy's student. Evolutionary biologists define it more recently as a process through which living creatures develop traits to increase their chances of surviving or conceiving offspring. As time passes this genetic variation can result in the development of entirely new physical or biological traits in a population. Natural selection is the process that drives the most evolutionary changes. However non-genetic changes like increases in the muscle mass as a result of exercise or diet cannot be considered examples of evolution because they are not passed on to future generations. Despite the fact that evolution has withstood the test of time and thousands of scientific experiments Creationists have taken advantage of the notion that the theory is controversial to argue that it shouldn't be taught in schools. In South Korea, a group known as the Society for Textbook Revise (STR), an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research, is campaigning for the removal of textbooks on the evolution of horses as well as the Avian ancestral Archaeopteryx. It is vital to remember, however, that the evidence in support of evolution is overwhelming. The evidence comes from a wide range of sources, such as fossils, genetic studies and the behavior of living organisms. Other scientists independently confirm the evidence. They believe that God created the universe exactly in the way that is described in the Bible. They believe that the biblical account of the creation's six days is true and that the universe and the life on Earth began only recently. Some academic institutions and scientists are however more flexible and permit both evolution and creationism to be incorporated into their curricula. What is Creationism? When people think of the concept of creationism most often, they think of the United States. However, South Korea is also home to an anti-evolutionist movement. The publishers of textbooks for high school students have recently announced that they will eliminate references to evolution from their textbooks. A group dubbed the Society for Textbook Revise (STR), an independent body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research which is the driving force behind the campaign. The STR has achieved its first victory by removing from textbooks evidence of the evolution and ancestor of the bird, the Archeopteryx. Its next target is to take out portions of Darwin's notorious finch-research as well as on human evolution. STR claims to have the support of 4,000 families and members. Its mission, it states is to clear the world of what it calls “atheist materialism” that paints an image of students as being negative. It also hopes to combat the influence of American Creationists across the country. A survey of trainee biology teachers revealed that around half do not believe in evolution. The reasons for this are not clear, but may include religion and the absence of full-time creation scientists in the United States. The KACR has achieved many things in the past through seminars and lectures. It publishes a bimonthly magazine, Creation, and has published books. Among these is a textbook on the natural sciences that has an orthodox creationist perspective, which has sparked interest among college students. In 1991, a professor, along with a minister began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught today. On August 6-7 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. The event was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from around the world including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of over a thousand.
